Vietnam tourism propaganda is back in the spotlight. This time, declaring war on Thailand tourism. After years of handing itself fake travel awards and paying online influencers to brand Vietnam as the world’s cheapest place to live, their new headline screams: “Thailand Tourism is Finished; Vietnam Tourist Places Rule Southeast Asia.”
Last year, Thailand welcomed over 35 million foreign visitors. That’s basically the entire population of Canada, plus a generous sprinkle of backpackers. Vietnam, energetic and ambitious, clocked in at 17.6 million. Respectable, but still barely half of Thailand’s tourist powerhouse.
And when we talk cash? Thailand’s tourism revenues hit a staggering $60 billion, more than Tesla’s Q4 revenue. Vietnam, meanwhile, pulled in around $18 billion, a decent sum, but Thailand’s tuk-tuks, beach bars, and elephant-print-pants vendors hoovered up over three times the cash their Vietnamese counterparts did.
Prefer Global Rankings
The World Economic Forum (WEF) places Thailand at #34 for travel competitiveness, a comfortable mid-table spot. Vietnam? Down at #67, grappling with potholes, spotty English, and those notorious visa hurdles that make even the most adventurous tourist think twice.
So, the next time you see Vietnam Tourism’s glossy billboards shouting “Vietnam Is Asia’s New Tourism Hub”, remember: they’re still comparing a firecracker to a cruise missile.
But, plot twist, 2025 tossed a curveball. A curveball that had Vietnam’s tourism propaganda machine strumming a victory riff. Thailand faced political unrest, rising prices, and a tourism fatigue that Vietnam was quick to exploit. Suddenly, the underdog had a chance to punch above its weight.
Today, we’ll shred through the spin. Vietnam vs Thailand, propaganda vs reality and find out who’s actually winning Southeast Asia’s tourism war. Billions in jobs and investments hang in the balance. This isn’t about bragging rights; it’s about cold, hard facts.
Let’s dive in.
